Europe in the tenth centuryEurope in the tenth century

 

Looking through the various maps of medieval Europe, I was upset by the overwhelming trend to project twentieth-century names of states back into the Middle Ages. One of the few maps which did not follow this line, but tried to portray the territories as they were called by their scholars, rulers and administrators at some moment before 1600 is this picture of Europe in the tenth century.
